The residency enabled me to design this work in contemplative silence, feeling connection with the wild nature of South Gippsland’s coast, in inspiring architecture that sits sensitively on the land. These solid and spacious foundations supported me to experiment with several methods to investigate the delicate and fragile boundary between loneliness and solitude. Remarkable to me was the ease with which ideas for this work occurred. There was a fluency about the creative process brings to my mind a quote from John Cage who wrote: “A sober and quiet mind is one in which the ego does not obstruct the fluency of the things that come in through our senses and up through our dreams.” The supportive environment of the residency enabled just such fluency.\n\nIn the end, the spacious atmosphere and intention of the residency set the tone for the design of a work in which there is space to pause, to listen, and to notice what emerges in a process of relational contemplation.\n\nThis residency, supported by generous hosts, took place on the unceded lands of the Gunaikurnai and Bunurong peoples. I acknowledge their enduring connection to Country and pay respect to their ongoing custodianship. The time and space I was given provided a remarkable space to listen, reflect, and develop my artistic and spiritual life in tandem.\n"}],"markDefs":[],"style":"normal"}]},{"image":{"asset":{"_id":"image-d0f866b7f68028dd62d8c18ee410635ad35b73eb-2316x1460-jpg"},"crop":null,"hotspot":null,"alt":null},"title":"Lauren Mallaby","subtitle":"April 2026","visibleText":[{"_key":"38c40e93e095","_type":"block","children":[{"_key":"b4985e5b7ec60","_type":"span","marks":[],"text":"Lauren Mallaby is a spiritual care practitioner, student counsellor, and contemplative creative whose work explores the intersection of reflection, creativity, and connection with the natural world."}],"markDefs":[],"style":"normal"}],"hiddenText":[{"_key":"e883f6667c22","_type":"block","children":[{"_key":"de19896b37b00","_type":"span","marks":[],"text":"For over a decade she has supported people navigating grief, identity, spiritual questions, and life transitions, integrating practices such as mindful contemplation, reflective writing, embodied awareness, music and art. I listened to music sometimes, but more often I didn't. I put my phone on airplane mode and was alone with my thoughts and the natural world. I was present.\n\nThere was a huge feeling of spaciousness and peace. A feeling that is throttled by the usual pace of everyday life, where my mind is crowded with everything, everywhere, all of the time. In this vast space, like currents in an ocean, my thoughts were able to swirl, coalesce, form and reform into new ideas. It was like finally being able to breath again. And in a way it was, ideas and breath are linked, the word inspiration comes from the Latin inspirare \"blow into, breathe upon.\" As my clown teacher says “breath, and the work comes to you.”\n\nI practice two methodologies, clown and shiatsu. They both fundamentally revolve around breath and presence. There’s obviously more to it, but neither works without those two essential things, which are in increasingly short supply in our frenetic modern world. As I walked through Ireland on a Peregrinatio, (to leave one's homeland and wander for the love of God), I sat at the feet of poets and I felt the land breathe great gentle laboured breaths. Through this experience, I was reminded that other people's words have always been a mentor into an en-souled world. Allowing me to join the conversation and aliven “the God question” John O’Donohue implores us to seek. These poetic mystics, through nature, find a way of simply and humbly naming the numinous, the ineffable.
